We seek a teacher-scholar who... has a demonstrated record of teaching, research, and publication in the field of Hebrew Bible with expertise in African Biblical Hermeneutics. Advanced training in the Hebrew language is expected, as well as knowledge of contexts and literatures of ancient West Asia (Near East) used in biblical study. The candidate’s research should manifest a keen sense of African cultures, socio-political contexts, and religions, as well as relevant scholarship.

The successful candidate will teach students across the curriculum including in the masters’ and doctoral programs, in the seminary’s Garrett Collective, and in other curricular initiatives related to the strategic plan. They will be expected to teach in a variety of modalities including in-person, hybrid, and online. The candidate will also advise students in our PhD, DMin, and masters’ programs and make constructive and collaborative contributions to the institutional and community life of the Seminary. The candidate will be willing to relocate to the Evanston/Chicago, IL area.

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) in the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Hebrew Bible and ancient Israelite history and culture. We seek candidates who demonstrate a broad knowledge of relevant Near Eastern contexts of the Bible and of post-biblical interpretive traditions... proficiency in relevant research languages; and promise The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) in the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Hebrew Bible and ancient Israelite history and culture. We seek candidates who demonstrate a broad knowledge of relevant Near Eastern contexts of the Bible and of post-biblical interpretive traditions... proficiency in relevant research languages; and promise of excellence in research and teaching. We also seek candidates who will play an active role in the life of the department and in Penn’s Jewish Studies Program.

Prospective candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree by the start of the appointment and show a firm and enthusiastic commitment to research and teaching. The successful applicant will teach four courses annually at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including specialized courses based on texts in original languages alongside general courses taught in translation. The successful candidate will also be responsible for overseeing language courses in Biblical Hebrew (taught by a lecturer).
